All About The School
History
The Willington Nursery Cooperative has been in existence since 1958. In 1974, the school began renting out the space that it currently resides in.
Mission Statement
The mission of Willington Nursery School Cooperative is to build a healthy foundation for life-long learning in children and their families. WNSC builds this foundation by supporting the development of the whole child through activities, which promote physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development. The program also supports the relationship between children, their families, and the preschool staff.
Philosophy
The philosophy of Willington Nursery School Cooperative is to provide a warm, safe, accepting environment where children may grow as individuals. We believe that valuing children as individuals promotes self-esteem and fosters positive values. We believe in providing a place where emotional, social, physical, and cognitive development is encouraged to create a foundation for a more formal education. While children learn at their own pace and in their own ways, learning among young children is best achieved through exploration and experience. We believe play should be the primary medium for a preschooler's learning. We recognize that children’s’ play is a highly supportive context for their developing processes. Play gives children opportunities to understand their environment, interact with others in social ways, express and control emotions, and develop their imagination and creativity. We see ourselves in partnership with parents, and through our mutual sharing we can ensure the best possible growth, and development for young children.
How our school is run
Aside from our wonderful teachers, what makes our school such a special place is that it is a cooperative, which means that it is run by the parents. As co-op families, we reap many benefits, such as low tuition and endless opportunities to get involved in our children’s’ first school experiences. The co-op environment can also foster a strong sense of community, even if you don’t happen to live in the town of Willington. It’s important to know that as a participating family you have a voice regarding policies, and if you see something that needs improvement, you have the opportunity to get involved.
